Chicago Weekend Violence Leaves 7 Dead, 48 Wounded

In a weekend that saw a series of multi-victim shootings, culminating early Sunday morning when 25 people were shot in one four-hour span, at least seven people are dead and another 48 wounded in Chicago violence, authorities said.

Seven people were sent to area hospitals in a shooting that began when a gunman in a vehicle opened fire on a group of people near a playground in the city's Douglas Park neighborhood early Sunday. Police believe that nearly 75 shots were fired during the incident, with at least four or five people firing weapons.

Hours later, a second mass shooting took place near a school in the city's Lawndale neighborhood. The shooting left one person dead and seven others wounded, including a 14-year-old boy.  

"As a city, we have to stand up and do a hell of a lot more than we've done in a very long time," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Monday. 

The weekend's last fatal shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday. There, two people were shot while driving in the 6900 block of South Wentworth when someone in a silver sedan opened fire on their vehicle, police said.

The driver was shot in the torso and struck a light box. He was pronounced dead at the scene while a 20-year-old female passenger was taken to University of Chicago Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left arm, according to authorities. 

Minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car at a gas station in the 5600 block of South Bloomingdale. Police said the man was in the car when two people walked up and fired shots. 

The man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and buttocks. He was later pronounced dead. A 21-year-old woman also suffered graze wounds to the leg and arms and was treated at the scene, authorities said. 

Two men were fatally shot on a sidewalk in the 1900 block of West Garfield at approximately 5:46 p.m. Sunday after a man walked up to them and opened fire, according to police. 

A 56-year-old man was shot in the neck, and was later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Another man, a 47-year-old, was shot in the elbow and was taken to the University of Chicago, where he is in stable condition. 

No suspect is in custody in the shooting. 

The city’s first fatal shooting occurred at approximately midnight Saturday morning in Chicago’s Fernwood neighborhood, according to police.

Authorities say that a 36-year-old man was walking in the first block of West 103rd Street when he saw a large group congregating on the street. Shots were then fired, and the man was shot in the leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Shortly after the shooting, an 19-year-old man was discovered in a nearby alley with a gunshot wound to his back. The man was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Just over two hours later, another fatal shooting took place in the 4600 block of West Monroe, police said. A 23-year-old man was sitting inside of a vehicle when a person nearby opened fire. The man was shot in the chest, and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

Another person, a 28-year-old man, was standing outside of the vehicle and was also hit in the leg. He was transported to Stroger, where he is in stable condition.

There were no witnesses to the incident, and no suspect is in custody.

In another shooting in the Englewood neighborhood Saturday afternoon, a 23-year-old man was standing outside a home in the 7300 block of South Stewart Street when a person in a gray vehicle opened fire, striking him in the head and chest. 

The man was pronounced dead within minutes of police arriving on scene, according to authorities. 

Early Sunday morning, another fatal shooting took place in the city's Lawndale neighborhood, according to police. A total of five people were shot in the incident, which occurred in the 4200 block of West 18th Street at approximately 3:43 a.m. 

One person, an unidentified man, was killed in the shooting, and seven other people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Here are the rest of the weekend’s shootings (beginning Friday evening and continuing through early Monday morning):

Friday –

• In the 1900 block of South Millard at approximately 7:18 p.m., a 19-year-old man was walking in an alley when a man pulled out a gun and shot him in the lower back, police said. The teen was taken to Mount Sinai, where he’s listed in critical condition.
• A 5-year-old boy was shot during an altercation in the 6700 block of South Parnell, according to police. During the incident, a 33-year-old woman was in a hallway when she got into an altercation with a 28-year-old woman. The older woman was stabbed during the altercation, and another man, a 34-year-old man, was also stabbed. Another individual, a 29-year-old man, then pulled out a gun and began firing at the woman as she attempted to get into a car. That gunfire struck the boy, who was hit in the leg. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in stable condition.
• At approximately 9:48 p.m. in the 3700 block of West George, a 35-year-old man was standing in an alley when he heard gunshots. The man was taken to Illinois Masonic, where he’s listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
• In the 7700 block of South Chicago Avenue at approximately 11:24 p.m., a 29-year-old man was driving when a person in a red vehicle opened fire, striking the victim in the hand. The man drove himself to Trinity Hospital, where he’s listed in good condition.

Saturday - 

• At approximately 1:03 a.m. in the 9100 block of South Baltimore, a 21-year-old man was riding in a car when a person in another vehicle opened fire, striking him in the arm and leg, police said. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he’s listed in stable condition.
• In the 2000 block of West 70^th Place at approximately 1:57 a.m., a 39-year-old woman was standing outside with a group of people when a man on foot opened fire, hitting her in the leg. She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition, according to authorities.
• Two men were shot in the 8000 block of South Stewart at approximately 3:35 a.m., according to Chicago police. ShotSpotter alerted police to the shooting, and when they arrived on scene, they discovered a 27-year-old man lying on the street, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, while a 25-year-old man, who was shot in the leg, is in stable condition. The younger man is refusing to cooperate with authorities, and no other witnesses have been located.
• At approximately 4:37 a.m. in the 6900 block of North Ashland, a 32-year-old man was riding a bike when a person in a white Ford Focus opened fire, striking him in the leg. He was taken to Saint Francis by a Good Samaritan, and was listed in stable condition, according to police.
• In the first block of South Leamington at approximately 4:47 a.m., a 23-year-old man was standing in a group of people when a person opened fire, striking him multiple times in the hip, according to police. The man was in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.
• At approximately 9:42 a.m. in the 12300 block of South Emerald, a 38-year-old man was walking when a man approached him, pulled out a gun, and opened fire, striking him in the abdomen. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
• A 22-year-old man was shot in the 300 block of East 132nd Place at approximately 3:11 p.m., police said. The man was standing in front of a residence when a person in a vehicle opened fire, striking him in the left foot. He was transported to Roseland Hospital in stable condition.
• A 16-year-old boy was walking around the 1400 block of S. St. Louis around 10:15 p.m., when he said he heard shots and felt pain, suffering gunshot wounds to his hand and ankle, CPD says. The victim stated he did not see the offender(s) or know where the shots came from and was transported to Mount Sinai in stable condition, police say. No is currently in custody.
• A 17-year-old boy was a passenger in a traveling vehicle when he was shot three times in the arm by an unknown offender near the 1900 block of W. 23rd St. at about 11:20 p.m., police say. The victim stated he did not know where the shots came from and did not see the offender(s). He was transported to Stroger in stable condition after his friend drove to the 1900 Block of W. 33rd St where CFD responded. Currently, no one in connection is in custody.

• A total of 7 individuals were at a park when shots were fired from a black Camaro in the 2900 block of W. Roosevelt at about 1:20 a.m., police said. A 21-year-old man was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his groin; a 25-year-old woman was also taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her tight arm and right leg; a 20-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right side of the body; a 19-year-old was also taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition with a wound to her right leg; another woman was taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition; and two other victims were self-transported to nearby hospitals.
• Two individuals were standing on the street at the 1200 block of S. Troy at approximately 2:35 a.m. when shots were fired, police said.  A woman self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her left hand, and another 26-year-old woman was transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition with gunshot wounds o the buttocks and hip. No one is currently custody. 
• The victims were standing outside of a vehicle in the 5600 W. Pontomac at around 3:52 a.m., when police say two men emerged from an alley and fired several shots in their direction. The victims drove to West Sub hospital. A 21-year-old woman was in critical condition and was transferred to Stroger from west sub hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the right arm and graze to the head. A 23-year-old man is in stable condition at west sub hospital with wounds in his left leg. And the third victim, a 22-year-old man was in stable condition at west sub hospital with wounds to his right leg. No one is currently in custody.
• A 30-year-old woman was standing on a sidewalk when shots were fired in the 4100 block of W. Adams at approximately 4:10 a.m., police said. The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her back. 
• A 54-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk of 3900 block of W. Congress at about 4:19 a.m., when he heard shots and felt pain, police reported. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the groin. 
• Three victims were standing on the sidewalk when they heard shots and felt pain near the 3300 block of W. Monroe at approximately 4:52 a.m. A 38-yearold was self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the right leg and buttocks; a 24-year-old man was self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with wounds to his left ankle; and a 23-year-old man was self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with gunshot wounds to his left leg.
• A 22-year-old man was shot while sitting on a front porch just after 9:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Flournoy, authorities said. According to police, the man was shot when someone in a black sedan fired shots. The 22-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a wound to the right ankle. He was last listed in stable condition, police said.
