Two Dead, 41 Wounded in Weekend Chicago Shootings

Among the victims are a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy who were walking down a street when gunfire erupted around them

Editor's Note: NBC Chicago included shootings from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Monday in its weekend violence report.

Two people have been killed and at least 41 others, including a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The weekend's most recent fatality happened just after 11 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of South Kildare Avenue.

A 32-year-old man was in a vehicle with a passenger when someone on a bicycle tried to rob him, police said. The driver attempted to drive away but the cyclist fired shots at the vehicle, striking the driver in the side.

The man drove south for about three blocks before crashing into a fence in the parking lot of Legacy Elementary School in the 1800 block of South Kildare Avenue.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The weekend's second fatality happened just after 11 p.m. Friday in the 6400 block of South Justine.

A 17-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were standing on the block in the West Englewood neighborhood when another man exited a white Cadillac nearby and opened fire, according to police.

The teen was struck in the chest and transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The 20-year-old victim was shot in the arm and transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened around 2 a.m. Monday when a 17-year-old boy was shot in the hand. Police said the teen was walking to a store when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up to him in the 2800 block of East 80th Street and the driver got out and fire shots. The teen took himself to South Shore Hospital where he was listed in good condition.

In another non-fatal incident, two boys, ages 12 and 15, were shot Saturday night in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The boys were walking in the 6700 block of South Winchester at about 9:40 p.m. when they heard gunfire erupt around them, police said.

The 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg, and the 15-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, according to police. Both were taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.

More than 35 others were wounded in shootings citywide since Friday evening.

The weekend is not yet over, but the number of shootings has already surpassed the total number of shootings on this weekend last year. In 2014, a total of 26 people were shot, including two teenagers at the Bud Billiken Parade in Bronzeville.
