Chicago Suburb Votes to Hike Sales Tax by 2 Percent

A southern Chicago suburb will soon be hiking its sales tax this summer.

A 12-1 City Council vote in Kankakee approved the tax rate increase from 6.25 percent to 8.25 percent, according to the Daily Journal. The new tax is set to take effect July 1.

The move would lift sales tax revenue from $3.7 million to an estimated $11.1 million, the publication reports.

The move could result in lowered property taxes in the area and would only be in effect for Kankakee. Other Kankakee County municipalities will keep the 6.25 percent sales tax rate.
