Chicago-Area Storms Possible Before Weekend Heat Wave

Radars show another day of cooler-than-average temperatures, increased winds and a potential for showers and thunderstorms later in the day

Good news if you're longing for the return of summer-like weather in the Chicago area: It's on its way Friday and through the weekend.

But first, radars show another day of cooler-than-average temperatures, increased winds and a potential for showers and thunderstorms later in the day.

NBC 5 weather models show a threat for heavier rain late Thursday afternoon into the evening and potentially strong-to-severe storms in some areas.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued  for Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle and Will Counties that will remain in effect until 12 a.m.

Showers and storms are expected to diminish overnight, leaving behind cloudy, mild and humid conditions with temperatures holding in the low to mid 70s.

Get ready for a traditionally summery day on Friday.

Conditions turn hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. High humidity levels could make temperatures feel like 95 to 100 degrees by late afternoon, and a few showers and storms are possible.

A chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms continues on Saturday for what should otherwise be a partly sunny, hot and humid day. Highs are expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, but it will feel hotter with high humidity. Heat Index values could range between 95 degrees and 100 degrees.

The hot weekend continues with a hazy, hot and humid Sunday producing highs near 90 degrees and hotter heat index values. Showers and thunderstorms are possible during the day.

Monday kicks off a less humid week with highs in the low- to mid-80s.
