16-Year-Old Boy Killed, 17 Others Wounded in Sunday Shootings

The boy was shot in the face and later died at an area hospital

A 16-year-old boy is dead after he was shot in the face in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, one of 18 people shot across the city in one day. 

According to police, the boy was standing in the 1800 block of South Komensky just after noon when another person walked up to him and opened fire, striking him in the face.

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No further details are available, and no one is in custody in connection with the shooting.

At least 14 other people have been wounded in shootings across the city Sunday. Just after 2 a.m., a 40-year-old man was found face-down with multiple gunshot wounds to his head, arms, and leg in the 6300 block of South King Drive, according to police.

Authorities say that two men wearing hooded sweatshirts walked up to the victim and opened fire, striking him multiple times. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, and no one is in custody.

Elsewhere in the city, a pair of men are in serious condition at Stroger Hospital after they were shot while riding in a vehicle in the 900 block of North Lorel at approximately 12:07 a.m., police said.

A 30-year-old man was shot in the lower back, and a 35-year-old man was shot in the buttocks by a person in a passing black sedan, and both men were taken to Stroger after the incident. No one is in custody, according to authorities.

Less than an hour later, three men were standing near a residence in the 1500 block of South Kenneth when they were shot by a man wearing a black hoodie, according to police.

A 45-year-old man was shot near his kidney and was listed in serious condition at Stroger Hospital.

A 36-year-old was shot in the right leg and forearm, while a 33-year-old man was shot in the calf. Both men were taken to Stroger in stable condition, according to police.

Here are the rest of Sunday’s shootings:

  • A 29-year-old man was driving a vehicle in the 5600 block of South Racine at approximately 12:51 a.m. when he was shot by a person in a passing car. The man, who was shot in the arm and abdomen, then crashed his car into a pole, and was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition, police said.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder while inside a business in the 3900 block of West Roosevelt, according to police. The man was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition, and refused to cooperate with police, or to identify the shooter.
  • In the 3800 block of South Princeton at approximately 3:26 a.m., a 25-year-old woman was walking toward a house when she was shot in the arm. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in stable condition.
  • At approximately 3:27 a.m. in the 4800 block of West Fulton, a 30-year-old man was shot while walking in the middle of the street, police say. The man was shot by another individual wearing a hooded sweatshirt, and was wounded in the torso and in the back. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
  • At approximately 4 a.m., a 24-year-old man was leaving a residence in the 5500 block of South Wabash when he was shot in the back, police said. He later walked into Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where his condition is unknown.
  • In the 5700 block of South Morgan at approximately 5:31 a.m., a 36-year-old man was shot in the left leg when three men broke into his house. He also suffered lacerations to his head when he was struck by one of the intruders, and was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition, according to police.
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the hip after he got out of his car and got into a verbal altercation with another man in the 0-100 block of West 111th Street, police said. The victim was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition. 
  • At approximately 7 p.m., a 35-year-old man was standing in the 5300 block of South Honore when he was shot in the neck. He was taken to Provident Hospital in stable condition, police said. 
  • At around 10:35 p.m. a 41-year-old man was speaking to another man who was sitting in an SUV parked in the 4000 block of West Carroll, according to police. After a brief conversation, the man in the car shot the victim, striking him in the lower left leg, officials said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in stable condition, according to police. 
  • An 18-year-old man was a passenger in a sedan in the 3200 block of North Pulaski at around 9:15 p.m. when he was shot, according to police. A white SUV pulled alongside his vehicle and someone inside began yelling gang slogans before opening fire, officials said, striking the man in the right arm. Authorities said the driver of the victim's vehicle crashed into multiple parked cars after the shooting. The victim was taken to Community First Hospital in good condition, according to police. 
  • At around 11:15 p.m., a 21-year-old man was in the 7800 block of South Yates when he was shot in the abdomen and leg, officials said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
