1 Dead, 7 Wounded in Thursday Shootings

Fourteen-year-old boy wounded in Rogers Park incident

One man was killed and at least seven other people -- including a 14-year-old boy -- were wounded in shootings across the city Thursday.

Demarcus Boswell, 18, was in the 2800 block of West 71st Street shortly before 5 p.m. when he was shot in the face and torso, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Boswell, of the 3300 block of West 65th Street, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police said he was a documented gang member.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened in the McKinley Park neighborhood.

A 19-year-old man was sitting in a garage with several other males about 10:10 p.m. in the 3300 block of South Leavitt Street, when a dark-colored sedan drove through the alley and shots were fired, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf and was taken in “stable” condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. No one else was injured in the shooting.

About 30 minutes earlier, a man was injured in an Austin neighborhood shooting.

The man, 36, was sitting on the front steps of a building about 9:40 p.m. in the 800 block of North Leclaire Avenue when several males approached and someone fired shots, striking the man in the lower back and buttocks, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in “stable” condition. Police said the man is a documented gang member.

The 14-year-old boy was shot about 9:05 p.m. in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

The boy was standing on the street in the 6500 block of North Ashland Avenue when several people approached and fired shots in his direction, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was listed in serious condition. Police said the boy’s injures were not life-threatening.

About 5 minutes earlier, a 21-year-old man was shot in Austin.

The man was standing on the corner about 9 p.m. in the 500 block of North Lawler Avenue, when a white van drove by and someone inside fired shots, police said. He suffered a graze wound to the leg and took himself in “stable” condition to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Police said the man is a documented gang member.

About 6:35 p.m., a man was shot and seriously injured in Roseland.

The 35-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen near 112th Street and Indiana Avenue, police said. He took himself to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

Fifteen minutes earlier, a man was shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

The man, 35, was in a vehicle traveling northbound in the 7200 block of South Harvard Avenue about 6:20 p.m., when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone inside exited and fired shots, striking the man, police said. The shooter then drove away. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in “stable” condition, police said.

About 2:05 p.m., a man was hurt in a shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The 25-year-old man was shot in the hand, arm and leg in the 2400 block of West Flournoy Street, police said. He was taken in “stable” condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

No one is in custody for any of the shootings as area detectives investigate.
