Fraternal Order of Police spokesman tells Chicago Sun-Times a BB gun was recovered from the scene

A woman carrying a BB gun was shot by Chicago police officers late Thursday night after she pointed the weapon at them, a police official said.

Officers went to the area of West 19th and South Morgan streets at about 10:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a woman with a gun.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said responding officers watched the woman walk from the 1000 block of West Cullerton to the 1900 block of South Morgan before turning to walk west in an alley behind Cullerton.

The officers drove behind the woman in the alley and found her hiding behind a garbage can, Camden said. She was shot when she stepped out from behind the garbage can and pointed a gun at the officers, he said.

Camden told NBC Chicago that a BB gun that looked like a handgun was recovered from the scene.

The were no officers injured in the shooting, police said.

The woman was taken to John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County where she remained in critical condition early Friday morning.

The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating the shooting.
