Man, 60, Shot While Shoveling Snow

Bernard Monroe was found with a gunshot wound to the head on Wednesday night

A 60-year-old man trying to make a few extra dollars shoveling snow was shot to death on Chicago's South Side on Wednesday night.

Bernard Monroe was found lying on the ground in the 11400 block of South Prairie with a gunshot wound to the head at about 7:20 p.m., according to police and a spokesperson with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Monroe lived on the block where he was killed, and his aunt said he left the house with a shovel in hand.

"He said .. I'm going to go make us some money and get us some free dollars and come back home," Sharon Rolland told NBC Chicago on Thursday.

No one was in custody as of 6:30 a.m. Friday.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said he has a reward on the table for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of Monroe's killer or killers.

"They've got to ask themselves if it was worth it, but it's just a matter of time before they're in custody," he said.
