Chicago Ranks Among Most Popular Cities to Celebrate Fourth of July

WalletHub ranked Chicago at No. 5 for its popularity as a destination for Fourth of July celebrations

Chicago is a city that likes to celebrate, and the Fourth of July is no exception.

A new study by the personal finance website WalletHub ranked the 100 largest cities in the country based on their Fourth of July celebrations, and Chicago came out on top in one category in particular — popularity.

Chicago ranks fifth in its popularity as a destination for Fourth of July celebrations, according to the WalletHub study. The city also fares well in walkability (eighth) and the number of Fourth of July celebrations and festivities (33rd).

Unfortunately, Chicago ranked much lower in other categories, such as the average price of beer and wine (97th), average price of gas (91st) and average price of a ticket to a Fourth of July event (68th). See the pattern? It's not cheap to celebrate the holiday in Chicago apparently.

Another report by Orbitz Worldwide, which was cited in the Chicago Tribune, also named Chicago as the top travel destination for the Fourth of July. The report attributed the ranking to the upcoming three-day "Fare Thee Well" Grateful Dead show, which takes place at Soldier Field July 3-5.

Chicago received an overall ranking from WalletHub of 58th, close behind New York (56th) and a little further behind Los Angeles (34th).

The top 10 cities for Fourth of July celebrations are, in order, Minneapolis; Seattle; St. Paul, Minn.; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; Irvin, Calif.; San Diego; Madison, Wisc.; Atlanta, Ga.; and St. Petersburg, Fla.
