Rain, Sleet & Snow: Winter Weather Advisory Hits Parts of Chicago Area

A Winter Weather Advisory takes effect for numerous Chicago-area counties Wednesday afternoon, warning of the potential for some accumulating snow and sleet.

The advisory takes effect at 1 p.m. in McHenry and Lake Counties and continues until 1 a.m. Thursday. In Winnebago, Boone and Ogle Counties, the advisory took effect beginning at 10 a.m.

Light rain and possibly even thunderstorms could arrive by the afternoon in areas north and west, mixing with sleet as it continues.

The sleet will likely transition to all snow by the late-afternoon and evening hours as highs range from the mid-30s to the low-40s, dropping to the upper-20s and low-30s as the evening goes on.

By the time the snow ends during the early morning hours Thursday, it could leave behind anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of accumulation in far northern counties and an inch or less in areas south to Interstate 80. Areas south of I-80 will likely see little to no accumulation.

Aside from lingering flurries early, Thursday will see partly sunny skies and more unseasonably cold conditions. Highs will stay in the low- to mid-40s.

The system could mark the end of snow for the Chicago area this season. Long-range models show no accumulating snow forecast as milder air begins to move in.
