City Hall wants the Chicago Police Department to slash millions of dollars off its budget.
Supt. Garry McCarthy said he must trim $190 million from his department's $1.3 billion annual budget, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
McCarthy said he's looking into eliminating job openings, but that would only make up half of the needed cuts.
The Sun-Times reports there are about 13,500 budgeted positions for sworn officers and about 1,400 vacancies.
The city is facing a budget deficit of more than $635 million.
Cutting manpower from the police department would contradict Mayor Rahm Emanuel's promise to add more than 1,000 police officers to the streets.
McCarthy has moved 750 officers to the streets from administrative positions since he took his job as superintendent.
