Chicago Police Officers Hurt After Firecracker Thrown at Squad Car

The incident occurred in the South Shore neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, according to police

Two Chicago Police officers were injured Sunday afternoon when someone threw a firecracker at their squad car, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The incident happened in the 7400 block of S Exchange Ave in the city's South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.

The officers were patrolling the corner at around 4:20 p.m. when an unknown vehicle approached their squad car, and someone inside threw a firecracker at the window, police said.

Preliminary reports from Chicago Police said the object was a half stick of dynamite, but CPD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi later said it was a firecracker.

An explosion occurred, authorities confirmed, after which the squad car wouldn't start. Both officers were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. They were listed in good condition.

No one is in custody, and police continue to investigate.
