A Chicago police officer was shot Saturday night while responding to a call in the city's Humboldt Park neighborhood, authorities say.
The shooting occurred just after 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Potomac, according to Chicago police.
According to police, the officer was shot in the left shoulder and was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where he is in critical, but stable, condition.
"He's in good spirits," Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. "Talking a lot. He just wants the ordeal to be over with."
According to a Chicago police spokesman, the officer is expected to survive.
Johnson revealed that the officer is 34 years old, and that he has been on the force for four and a half years. He also served in the Marine Corps for eight years, according to the superintendent.
A police spokesman said that several people of interest were in custody for questioning, and that a gun was recovered from the scene. A woman, who police believe shot the officer, is in custody.

The woman is known to police, according to Superintendent Johnson, and the department has had several encounters with her.
Officers were attempting to breach the rear door of a residence to execute the search warrant when the woman allegedly fired a shot through the door, striking the officer in the shoulder.
No shots were fired by police officers during the exchange.
