A Chicago police officer fatally shot himself with his service weapon Sunday night while in his squad car parked outside of a district station, a department spokesman confirmed.

The 36-year-old man was found outside the Calumet district station in the 700 block of East 111th Street, according the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. His death was ruled a suicide.

“The veteran officer was working with our organized crime section and he tragically took his own life,” department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. “We have made grief counselors and chaplains available to the officers that knew him and our deepest condolences go out to his family.”
