Chicago Police Officer Shoots, Kills Dog During Chase

No one was in custody for the robbery as of late Tuesday morning

A Chicago Police officer shot and killed a dog while chasing a robbery suspect Monday morning on the South Side.

A 55-year-old man was robbed by an armed suspect in the Washington Park neighborhood about 7:30 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

The victim flagged down police officers and gave them a description of the robber, Estrada said. The officers searched the area and saw a man matching the description of the robber running away.

He ran into a backyard in the 5900 block of South King Drive, and the officers followed. A large dog charged at the officers, and one of the officers shot him, killing the dog, Estrada said.

No one was in custody for the robbery as of late Tuesday morning, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
