A Chicago police officer was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Monday night after being hit by a car on the city's south side.
The female officer was dragged for about a half-block after being struck by a car near West 83rd Street and South Kerfoot Avenue, other officers on the scene said.
The officer suffered non life-threatening injuries. By late night, she was sitting up and talking, department spokesman Ron Gaines said.
The incident started about 9:10 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Kerfoot Avenue, when Gresham District police pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation, police spokesman Hector Alfaro said.
As police approached, the woman driving hit the officer in the face then sped off, striking her with the vehicle and dragging her, Alfaro said.
Roughly a dozen police cars escorted the ambulance rushing the officer to the Streeterville neighborhood hospital.
"It could have been a lot worse," said Gaines, speaking from the hospital Monday night.
The driver of the car was later arrested. Charges were pending late Monday night.
