Off-Duty Officer Ejected, Killed in Kennedy Rollover

Eric Berger, 52, was a 17-year CPD veteren

An off-duty veteran Chicago Police officer was killed in a rollover crash on the Kennedy Expressway early Monday on the Northwest Side.

Eric Berger, a 17-year veteran of the force assigned to the Albany Park District on the Northwest Side, was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The wreck occurred about 3:47 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-90 at North Nagle Avenue, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Mark Hall, who said the driver was the only person in the vehicle.

The 52-year-old Berger may have lost control on a curve at West Bryn Mawr Avenue at which point he rolled the 2007 Volkswagen 2-door hatchback he was driving and was ejected, an Illinois State Patrol spokesman said. He was dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation but police said it was unclear Monday afternoon whether speeding, drugs or alcohol were factors.
