Residents Alarmed by North Side Shooting That Left 27-Year-Old Hurt

The woman was walking on Surf when a man on a bicycle opened fire, police said

A woman is recovering in an area hospital, and a community is on high alert after she was shot while walking in the city’s East Lake View neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The 27-year-old woman was walking in the 600 block of West Surf at approximately 1:28 a.m. when a man rode by her on a bicycle and then fired shots at her, hitting her in the chest.

The woman was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition has since stabilized.

As news of the shooting spread, neighbors expressed shock that their quiet community would experience such a seemingly random act of violence.

“It’s terrifying,” resident Katia Piza said. “I live on Clark Street and come down this block all the time to Mariano’s to take the bus on Lake Shore Drive, and it’s really unnerving.”

A recent uptick in crime has caused police to increase their presence in Lakeview and Lincoln Park. On Lake Shore Drive Thursday, four people were shot, one fatally. On Friday night, two people were shot on North Avenue in the city’s Old Town neighborhood.

“Hopefully they can find out what happened because I don’t like seeing that around here,” Dan Tazbier, who works near the scene, said.

Police have yet to identify a suspect or a motive in the attack, and their investigation is ongoing.

The shooting is one of nearly two dozen that have occurred in the Chicago-area already this weekend, as two people are dead and at least 27 others have been wounded.
