More than three thousand people will be freezin’ for a reason this weekend as the 19th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge takes place on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The event, which benefits Special Olympics Chicago, will feature thousands of residents jumping into the frigid waters for a good cause.
The money raised from the event goes to all of the items that the Special Olympics organization needs for its athletes, including transportation, medals, sports equipment, and trips for the more than 7,500 area athletes that participate in the program.

Online registration for the Polar Plunge has closed, but if you still want in on the action, you can head to North Avenue Beach and register in-person. The tent is open until 7 p.m. on Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and on Sunday morning from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

In order to participate, polar plungers are being asked to donate at least $200, but teams have already raised thousands of dollars for the event.

According to organizers, more than $1.3 million has already been raised for the event, and the group’s goal of $2 million appears to be in reach as the event approaches.
