Chicago Movable Bridge Tours Begin

Locals and tourists can get an up-close look at an historic landmark bridgehouse beginning Saturday.

Visitors will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to check out Chicago's moveable bridges by taking a walking tour, listening to lectures and watching a bridge lift.

"As majestic as Chicago's lifting bridges are from afar, watching a bridge lift from inside the bridgehouse usually leaves visitors awe-struck," said McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum Director Jim Phillips

The brand new two-hour Loop Bridges walking tour is offered on Saturdays in September. It begins at 12 p.m and costs $12. Reservations are required and can be made at

Beginning Sept. 17th, visitors can get a behind-the-scenes look at the gear room inside the Bridgehouse Museum and watch as a bridge lifts out of the way of passing boats.

There are 18 drawbridges around Chicago ranging in age from 27 to 98 years.
