A sunny Memorial Day could turn stormy for the Chicago area by the end of the day with heavy rain, small hail and lightning possible in some areas.
Models show scattered showers and thunderstorms developing Monday afternoon and evening in 30 to 40 percent of the area.
Though severe weather seems unlikely, some storms could produce cloud-to-ground lightning, brief heavy downpours and hail.
Most showers and storms are expected to diminish overnight, with some rain persisting into Tuesday.
The rest of Memorial Day looks partly sunny to mostly cloudy, as well as warm and humid. Afternoon highs could reach the low to mid 80s inland and a bit cooler along the lakefront.
The next chance for storms comes Tuesday afternoon and evening across the area. A few morning showers are possible Wednesday with a few storms in the afternoon, mainly in southern counties.
Thursday turns cooler and less humid, models show, and temperatures hang in the low-to-mid-70s through much of the weekend.
