2019 Chicago Marathon: Street Closures, Tips for Getting Around the City

Here's a look at what you can expect, whether you're coming for the marathon or not

With thousands of runners hitting Chicago's streets for the 2019 Bank of America Chicago Marathon this weekend, that means street closures and reroutes will be in effect. 

But what roads will close and for how long? How can you get around the city? 

Here's a look at what you can expect, whether you're coming for the marathon or not. 

What Streets Will be Closed and When

Ahead of the Race

Jackson Boulevard from Columbus Drive to Lake Shore Drive will be closed beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. 

Balbo Avenue between Columbus Drive and Lake Shore Drive was closed beginning at 10 a.m. Monday. That closure was extended Tuesday to Michigan Avenue. 

Columbus Drive will close at 4 a.m. Thursday from Roosevelt to Congress. At 4 a.m. Friday, Congress to Monroe will also be closed. 

On Saturday, the Columbus Drive closure extends to Randolph beginning at 6 a.m. and Monroe Street from Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive will close at noon.

Grand Ave.: Columbus Dr. to State St. 7-10:00 a.m.

State St.: Grand Ave. to Jackson Blvd. 7-10:30 a.m.

Wentworth Ave.: Cermak Rd. to 33rd St. 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

33rd St.: Wentworth Ave. to State St. 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

State St.: 33rd St. to 35th St. 7 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

35th St.: State St. to Indiana Ave. 7 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Indiana Ave.: 35th St. to 31st St. 7 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

31st St.: Indiana Ave. to Michigan Ave. 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Michigan Ave.: 31st St. to Roosevelt Rd. 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Roosevelt Rd.: Michigan Ave. to Columbus Dr. 7 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Columbus Dr.: Roosevelt Rd. to Finish 7 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

*Parking restrictions will also be in place along the course beginning early Sunday morning. 

Alternate Routes

Main thoroughfares

Lake Shore Drive: Northbound and southbound lanes will remain open.

Inner Lake Shore Drive: Northbound and southbound lanes will remain open from Diversey Pkwy. to Belmont Ave. Access to Lake Shore Dr. will remain open at Belmont Ave.

Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94): Eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open. Exit ramp closed: Southbound ramp to 31st St.

Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94): Eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open. Entrance and exit ramps closed: Adams St.

Eisenhower Expressway (I-290): Eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open.

Stevenson Expressway (I-55): Northbound and southbound lanes will remain open.

Loop

(Bordered by Wells St., Van Buren St., Wabash Ave. and Lake St.)

All streets in the Loop will be open to traffic by 9 a.m on race day (Oct. 13) (Public transportation recommended). 

North of the Loop

Michigan Ave. north of 8th St. North and southbound lanes will remain open including access to the Magnificent Mile.

Clybourn Ave. will remain open.

Lincoln Ave. north of Sedgwick St. will remain open.

Clark St. north of Diversey Pkwy. will remain open.

West of the Loop

Milwaukee Ave. will remain open.

Halsted St. north of Adams St. will remain open.

Ashland Ave. north of Adams St. will remain open.

Damen Ave. north of Adams St. will remain open.

South of the Loop

Damen Ave. south of Jackson Blvd. will remain open.

Ashland Ave. south of Jackson Blvd. will remain open.

Archer Ave. south of Cermak Rd. will remain open.

Halsted St. south of Cermak Rd. will remain open.

Michigan Ave. south of 35th St. will remain open.

Martin Luther King Dr. will remain open.

Public Transportation

CTA

The Chicago Transit Authority plans to provide extra service for race day and Friday's Abbott Health and Fitness Expo. For a list of marathon viewing areas near CTA stops click here

Friday and Saturday

Rail: Green Line will operate longer trains. Exit at Cermak-McCormick Place station

Bus: Extra service on #3 King Drive

Sunday

Rail: Longer trains on Brown, Green, Orange and Blue lines. More frequent service on the Red, Blue, Brown and Green lines before and/or after the event. Earlier service on the Purple Line

Bus: Extra service on #3 King Drive

Metra

Metra will be offering added/modified service on select lines to accomodate passengers attending the Chicago Marathon. Click here for a summary of added/modified service.
