1 Killed, 2 Injured in Fire on Chicago's West Side

One person was killed and two others, including a firefighter, were injured in a massive blaze on Chicago's West Side early Friday.

Just before 3 a.m., crews responded to an apartment in the 5200 block of West Chicago Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

A man and a woman were found unconscious inside, fire officials said at a news conference. They were both taken to area hospitals where the woman was pronounced dead and the man was listed in critical condition.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including the victims' ages or identities, were not available.

A firefighter was injured in the blaze, officials said, suffering a back injury. He was taken to Oak Park Medical Center where he was listed in good condition, authorities said.

At least 11 people were displaced after the blaze, which was struck out by 4 a.m.

Some items in the apartment made it difficult for crews to get through and reach the victims, according to fire officials. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
