Man Charged in Hit-and-Run Death of Indian Man

Michael T. Epley faces felony charges following crash that killed Rajendrakumar Shah on his birthday

A 22-year-old south suburban man was facing felony charges Monday after being involved in a hit-and-run accident last week that killed a 61-year-old man visiting from India, police said.

Michael T. Epley, of the 2200 block of Prairie Street, in Blue Island, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, and failure to stop after having an accident involving personal injury or death, and cited for various traffic offenses, according to Tinley Park police.

Rajendrakumar Shah, who was in the United States for a wedding and to visit family in Tinley Park, died Wednesday night -- his 61st birthday -- after being hit by a pickup while crossing 159th Street at 80th Avenue in Tinley Park, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Epley then fled the scene, police said.

Shah, who was staying with family in the 16100 block of Kensington Avenue, died about 10 p.m. Wednesday at Palos Community Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.
