Chicago Gas Prices Continue to Soar

Gasoline prices exceed last year's averages

Gas prices continue to rise in the Chicago area and across the Midwest even as average gasoline costs stabilize in other parts of the country.

Chicago saw an increase of 19 cents per gallon, capping off a state average of $4.23 per gallon for regular gas. One year ago, Chicago's average gas price was $3.97 per gallon.

AAA Chicago Motor Club reports Chicago owns the highest city average in the continental U.S.

The increase is likely due to refinery issues in the region, and though prices are predicted to balance out at a constant rate in the month of June, Illinois prices are on the rise.

The U.S. average was at $3.64 as of Thursday, with South Carolina seeing the lowest price of $3.18 and Hawaii at the nation's highest with $4.31 a gallon at the pump, according to Gasbuddy.com
