Woman Killed, Two Injured in Logan Square Fire

Fire department spokesman Larry Langford said it appeared the fire started on a mattress where one man was sleeping

A woman was killed and two men were injured when fire broke out in a second story apartment in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood.

Firefighters were called to the 3400 block of West Armitage Avenue at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday. A fire official said the apartment had been vacant for about six month so it's believed the trio were squatters.

The woman, whose name was not publicly released as of 6:30 a.m. Friday, was taken to Norwegian Hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. The two men were transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. One was said to be alert and talking. The other had burns covering about 25 percent of his body and was in critical condition.

Their exact ages were not immediately available.

Fire department spokesman Larry Langford said it appeared the fire started on a mattress where one man was sleeping. Smoking materials may have started the fire, he said.

Drug paraphernalia and alcohol were found at the scene, a firefighter said.
