Chicago Cubs, Anthony Rizzo Score Win Over Padres at Scorching Hot Wrigley Field

Javier Báez also homered in the Cubs' sixth victory in their last seven games

On a scorching hot day at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs managed to outlast the San Diego Padres as they collected their sixth win in their last seven games.

Addison Russell scored an eighth inning run on an error by Eric Hosmer, and that was enough for the Cubs to grab the victory as Craig Kimbrel slammed the door and earned the save in the ninth inning of the contest.

Anthony Rizzo hit a grand slam in the third inning, his 20th home run of the season, and Javier Báez hit his 23rd home run of the season to secure the Cubs’ third straight victory.

Jon Lester gave up 12 hits to the Padres, but he only surrendered four runs and struck out six batters in six innings of work.

The Padres got to Lester early in the game, as Hunter Renfroe hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Manny Machado hit a home run in the third inning to give the Friars a 3-0 edge.

The Cubs quickly erased that deficit in the bottom of the frame, as Rizzo hit a grand slam into the left field bleachers to give the Cubs a 4-3 advantage.

Francisco Mejía hit an RBI double to left field in the fifth inning to tie the game back up at four, but Báez responded with a home run of his own in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Cubs back a slim one-run lead.

The Padres wouldn’t go down quietly however, as Josh Naylor hit an eighth inning home run to knot things up at 5-5. The Cubs responded by scratching out a run in the eighth, with David Bote grounding into a fielder’s choice and Russell scoring on an error by Hosmer to put the Cubs in front for good.

The two teams will play again on Saturday at Wrigley, with José Quintana taking the hill for the Cubs in the second game of a three-game set.
