The Chicago Cubs might be looking to battle the Washington Nationals in a makeup game, but they’re not looking to battle Mother Nature too.

It appears the team is trying to convince the MLB to reschedule their makeup game, scheduled for Thursday, as Hurricane Florence threatens the East Coast.

Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney told 670 The Score in an interview they’re hoping to play the game later in the year or have the game time changed to later in the day.

Rescheduling could be tricky as both teams have packed schedules for the remainder of the season, which could mean if the game is rescheduled it may be played after the regular season ends.

"We're assuming we're playing in Washington on Thursday and therefore it would help if we finish late in Washington on Thursday to play a little later here on Friday," Kenney said. "That's the most we can do at the moment and continue to monitor the storm and really just hope for the best for the folks on the East Coast."

It remains unclear what the league plans to do for the game as the storm approaches, but officials could be hesitant to reschedule the game for after the regular season as it could conflict with a wild card or divisional tiebreaker. 

The center of the massive storm is forecast to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday along a stretch of coastline already saturated by rising seas, and then meander for days, inundating several states and triggering life-threatening floods.

Sustained winds of up to 130 mph (215 kph) were reported Tuesday morning, but it remains a Category 4 storm and is expected to intensify to near Category 5 status as it slows over very warm coastal waters.
