Opening Day Success Could Indicate Great Things for Cubs

The Chicago Cubs didn’t have an easy time on Opening Day, but they were able to persevere in an 8-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

The Cubs, who now have a 75-60-2 record on Opening Day, rode the momentum of several home runs in the game, including a lead-off shot off the bat of Ian Happ. The Happ homer came on the first pitch of the first pitch of the regular season, and it set some history in the process.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Happ is the first player to hit a home run on the first pitch his team saw in an MLB season since Kaz Matsui accomplished the feat in 2004.

In addition to the MLB history, Happ also helped the Cubs do something that their fans will enjoy. The last time the Cubs won an Opening Day game in 2016, when they beat the Los Angeles Angels in an interleague showdown. The Cubs then went on to win the World Series that year.

In fact, the Cubs have won their Opening Day game in each of the three seasons that they’ve won the World Series, getting their chances of a second title in three years off to a good start.

Also, the Cubs played the Marlins for the third time on an Opening Day, and the last time they did, in 1998, saw another playoff appearance for the North Siders.
