Chicago Cubs Fall to Cincinnati Reds in Series Finale

The Chicago Cubs fell to the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 2-1 Sunday, snapping an eight-game winning streak against the team.

Despite the loss, the Cubs maintained their two and a half game lead in the Central Division, as the Milwaukee Brewers lost for the second straight day. That loss drops the Cubs’ magic number to clinch the division to 11 with two weeks to go in the season.

Luis Castillo gave up one earned run and struck out two batters in 6.2 innings of work for the Reds. Albert Almora Jr. drove in the Cubs’ lone run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning of the contest.

Jose Quintana only allowed two runs in five innings, but gave up a lead-off home run to Scott Schebler, his fourth lead-off home run allowed this season.

The Cubs gave up another home run to Phillip Ervin in the fourth inning, and that was all the offense the Reds needed as they held on for the narrow win.

The Cubs will now head to Arizona for a three-game series with the fading Diamondbacks, and after the conclusion of the series, the Cubs will return to Chicago, where they will play their final 10 games of the regular season in series against the White Sox, Pirates, and Cardinals.
