The San Diego Padres used an unorthodox strategy on the mound on Sunday, and it paid off as they beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 and salvaged the final game of a three-game series.

Rookie pitcher Adrian Morejon made his major league debut when he started the game, but only pitched two and one-third innings and giving up one earned run. Cal Quantrill came into the game after that and had a strong afternoon, earning the victory as he allowed zero earned runs and scattered two hits.

Kyle Hendricks nearly matched the duo pitch-for-pitch, giving up two earned runs in seven innings of work, but he was the tough-luck loser as the Cubs finished off a respectable 7-2 homestand.

The Cubs got on the board first in the game, as Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI groundout to first base. Javier Báez scored on the play, pushing the Cubs ahead by a 1-0 margin.

That lead held up until the fifth inning when rookie sensation Fernando Tatis Jr. continued his strong play against the Cubs, hitting an RBI single to right field to knot things up at 1-1.

Francisco Mejía stepped up to the plate in the seventh inning and smacked a home run just over the basket in right field, giving the Padres a 2-1 edge on the scoreboard.

The Padres added three more runs in the ninth inning, and Kirby Yates slammed the door on the Cubs to finish off the game and the series.

The Cubs will open a three-game set against the San Francisco Giants in the Bay Area on Monday night, kicking off a key nine-game road trip that will also feature stops in Milwaukee and St. Louis.
