A day after Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was hit by two pitches in a game against the Colorado Rockies, Nolan Arenado suffered a similar fate during Wednesday’s matinee between the two clubs.
Arenado, who has 17 home runs and 57 RBI for the Rockies this season, was hit by a pitch in the third inning by Cubs starter Cole Hamels. Arenado was visibly upset by the pitch’s location, yelling that it was “too high” as he shouted toward Hamels.
Cooler heads ultimately prevailed as players remained on both benches, and Arenado was examined by a trainer after the incident.
Arenado was ultimately removed from the game and replaced at third base.
Later in the game, Hamels was hit by a pitch, as was first baseman Anthony Rizzo. After Rizzo was plunked, umpires issued a warning to both teams, and Rizzo promptly stole second base despite the team being up by eight runs.
To add insult to injury, Javier Báez blasted a 460-foot home run to make it a 10-0 game.
The incident is just the latest involving the two teams, who faced off in last year’s National League Wild Card Game. Bryant was hit in the head by a pitch last season in a game against the Rockies, with his helmet spinning around on his head after the ball impacted the bill of the helmet.

He continued to the victim of inside pitching on Tuesday, as he was hit by two separate pitches in the game. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that because of the barrage of pitches his third baseman had been struck by, as well as an ankle injury he suffered Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, Bryant would sit out the series finale at Coors Field.
Wednesday’s game is the last contest of the season between the two clubs.
