Jonathan Lucroy Reportedly Heading to Cubs

Lucroy was recently designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels

With Willson Contreras on the injured list, the Chicago Cubs made a much-needed addition at their catching positioning, reportedly signing Jonathan Lucroy to a contract.

That news, which comes from MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, comes just days after Lucroy was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels. The catcher cleared waivers, freeing him to sign with any team, and the Cubs have reportedly scooped him up to help fill in while Contreras is on the mend from a pulled hamstring.

A two-time All-Star, Lucroy struggled during the last two seasons, batting .242 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 268 plate appearances with the Angels this season. He’ll be looking for a fresh start with the Cubs, and the team will hope he can re-find his form as Contreras is expected to miss at least a month due to his hamstring injury.

The Cubs will likely option Taylor Davis back to the minor leagues to make room for Lucroy, but no official move has yet been announced.
