Javier Báez Chosen as Cover Athlete For ‘MLB: The Show' Video Game

Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Báez has become a fan favorite because of his prodigious power, slick defense, and charismatic presence on the diamond, and he’s been chosen as next season’s cover athlete for the “MLB: The Show” video game.

Báez, who hit 29 home runs and drove in 85 RBIs for the Cubs last season before a broken thumb derailed his season, was announced as the cover athlete on social media Monday, and Sony released a promo video with images of the shortstop in action:

“The first time I was on the roster I was a backup, and I was truly excited about it,” he said in the video. “Now that I get to be the cover athlete and have all this support from the kids, it’s a great thing for me.:

Báez is the first Cubs player to appear on the cover of a video game in the MLB franchise, which was launched in 1998. The last Cubs player to appear on the cover of any video game was former outfielder Sammy Sosa, who was the cover athlete for “Triple Play 2000,” a game released on the original PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Microsoft Windows platforms.

“MLB: The Show 20” will be available for the PlayStation 4 on March 17, 2020. Pre-orders are available now, according to Sony.
