Jason Heyward Joins Exclusive Club With Walk-Off Grand Slam

Heyward is the first Cub in fifty years to accomplish this feat

It’s pretty uncommon for a player to hit a walk-off grand slam, but in the case of Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, his big fly put him in some incredibly exclusive company.

Heyward, who didn’t even have an extra-base hit against a left-handed pitcher this season, unloaded on a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, and by the time the ball landed, the Cubs had a 7-5 victory and Heyward was being mobbed at home plate.

According to Cubs Historian Ed Hartig, Heyward’s walk-off grand slam was the first hit while the team was trailing since Hall of Fame third baseman Ron Santo hit one in a 1968 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was also the third the Cubs have ever hit at Wrigley Field while trailing, with Ellis Burton hitting the other one in 1963 against the Houston Colt 45’s.

The victory was the Cubs’ eighth in their last 10 games, and put them just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the Central Division race.

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta returned to the Friendly Confines this week, and we’re looking back at his best moments with the team.
