Cubs Injuries: Kimbrel Placed on Injured List as Team Reveals Contreras Out for 4 Weeks

Kimbrel was placed on the 10-day injured list for right knee inflammation, retroactive to Sunday

The Chicago Cubs got more bad news on the injury front Monday with closer Craig Kimbrel being placed on the injured list and catcher Willson Contreras now expected to miss four weeks following a hamstring strain.

Kimbrel was placed on the 10-day injured list for right knee inflammation, retroactive to Sunday, the teamm announced. Reliever Duane Underwood Jr. was reportedly recalled from Triple-A Iowa to replace Kimbrel.

Contreras, who was removed from Saturday’s game against the Brewers after suffering a leg injury while running the bases, appears to have a hamstring strain. The Chicago Tribune reports he is expected to miss four weeks.

Contreras was batting in the bottom of the seventh inning when he drove the ball into left-center field and took off running down the first base line. While running, Contreras immediately pulled up limping, appearing to hold his right leg.

The injury comes nearly two years to the day since Contreras suffered a pulled hamstring during the 2017 season. That injury knocked the catcher out of action for exactly a month, derailing what looked to be a potential surge for NL MVP honors.

Switch-hitter Victor Caratini is expected to replace Contreras.
