Chicago Cubs' Shutout Over Brewers Puts Team's Season in Elite Company

The Chicago Cubs’ victory Wednesday over the Milwaukee Brewers was not only big in the division race, but it also helped the team accomplish something they hadn’t done in 80 years.

The victory, a 3-0 shutout in front of a packed crowd at Wrigley Field, gave the Cubs a two-game division lead over Milwaukee, and was the team’s sixth shutout triumph over the Brewers.

According to the Cubs’ stats department, the six shutouts are the most the Cubs have had against a single team in 80 years, as they shutout the Cincinnati Reds on seven occasions during the 1928 season.

The Cubs have a total of 16 shutouts this season, the most in Major League Baseball. The team had just eight shutouts a season ago, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

The team will try to extend that mark on Wednesday when they face the Brewers for the final time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
