Cubs Reportedly Sign Pitchers George Kontos, Junichi Tazawa

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly planning to audition at least two more relievers, as the team has inked minor league deals with pitchers George Kontos and Junichi Tazawa.

Kontos, whom was born in Lincolnwood and attended Northwestern University, signed a minor league deal with the team on Friday, according to Bruce Levine of 670 the Score.

Kontos spent a long stretch of his career with the San Francisco Giants, winning two World Series titles as a member of the team’s bullpen. As of late he’s struggled to find his form, posting a 4.39 ERA and striking out 15 batters in 26.2 innings last season with the Pirates, Indians, and Yankees.

Cubs fans will also remember Kontos from giving up a home run to relief pitcher Travis Wood during the 2016 National League Division Series.

The Cubs held their annual Community Service Day on Thursday as players and coaches made stops around the city. NBC 5’s Mike Berman has all the latest on the team’s activities.

The Cubs also reportedly inked Tazawa to a minor-league deal, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Mark Gonzales.

Tazawa spent last season with the Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Angels, posting a 7.07 EREA and giving up seven home runs in just 28 innings. He did strike out 28 batters however, and the Cubs are hoping that they can get him back on the right track as they invite him to spring training.
