For the second year in a row, the Chicago Cubs appear to have signed a pitcher recovering from Tommy John surgery, as they’ve reportedly inked hurler Kendall Graveman to a deal.

Graveman, who had the surgery earlier this year, wouldn’t pitch until at least September if he’s able to get through his rehab process. He could still be a depth piece for the future for Chicago, as he’ll have a $3 million option for 2020, according to Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers and FanCred's Jon Heyman were the first to report the deal. 

The hurler was the A’s Opening Day starter last season, but was hampered by injuries and ineffective pitching, posting a 7.60 ERA and striking out 27 batters in 34.1 innings of work.

Graveman is the second Cubs pitcher to be signed while rehabbing from an elbow injury in the last two seasons. Pitcher Drew Smyly was signed by the Cubs last year despite not being available for Opening Day, and was ultimately traded to the Texas Rangers after the season without having pitched for the big league club.

In his career, Graveman has started in 78 games, posting a 23-29 record and a 4.38 ERA.
