Chicago Cubs SP Cole Hamels Questions Whether Team Has Rivalry With Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have taken the first two games of their series with the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park this week, but that hasn’t stopped pitcher Cole Hamels from taking a bit of a shot at fans in Wisconsin.

Hamels, who was acquired by the Cubs in July, told media earlier this week that he didn’t know if the hatred between the two teams was a “rivalry yet” because of the number of Cubs fans that were in the ballpark for the teams’ Labor Day contest.

“I know the rivalries I’ve had in the past, you can definitely feel it,” he said. “When you have majority Cubs fans in the stands, I don’t know if that’s a rivalry yet. They’re not going to like me for the comment, but you can look at the ticket sales.

“It’s no (knock on) who they have in the dugout. They have great players. But in this great game of baseball, you want to see fans in the stands, and obviously that’s where you feel it the most. To be able to see the Cubs fans travel in the masses they do, it’s great to see,” he added.

The Brewers have tried various strategies to try to keep Cubs fans out of Miller Park, including presales for Wisconsin residents, but the moves haven’t worked this season, as Cubs fans have still flooded into the ballpark for games between the clubs.

Even still, the Brewers aren’t giving Cubs fans much to cheer about, as they are 5-3 against Chicago in games at Miller Park this season.

The teams will play their final contest of the season at the ballpark when they face off Wednesday night at 7:10 p.m.
