Chicago Cubs Closer Craig Kimbrel Heading to Majors, Joe Maddon Says

Kimbrel is reportedly set to be activated on Thursday

Chicago Cubs fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of closer Craig Kimbrel on the North Side, and it appears that their dreams will soon come true.

According to Cubs manager Joe Maddon, Kimbrel is “on his way” to Chicago, and will likely be activated for Thursday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves, NBC Sports Chicago's Tony Andracki and others report

Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register was first to report that Kimbrel was on his way to the Cubs.

In four appearances with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, Kimbrel posted a 2.45 ERA and struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of work. He was optioned to the club after signing a three-year contract with the Cubs earlier this month.

A corresponding roster move has not been announced by the team, but will likely be released prior to Thursday’s game.

Kimbrel began his big league career with the Atlanta Braves, registering 186 saves in five seasons with the team. He has a combined 333 saves for three different teams, and will hope to solidify the back end of the team’s bullpen when he arrives in Chicago.
