Security Guard Pens Touching Note About Ben Zobrist's Kindness at Cubs Convention

Chicago Cubs infielder Ben Zobrist is always a fan favorite at the team’s annual convention, but over the weekend he also won over a security guard that penned a fantastic note about watching the star player work.

Zobrist, who was one of a slew of Cubs players to attend this week’s convention, signed autographs and took pictures with fans, and Tim Haverty shared a story on Facebook that illustrates the kind of man Zobrist is:

“Looking back on my weekend working security at the Cubs Convention...

“The highlight of my entire time was spending time with Ben Zobrist Saturday morning. There isn't a kinder, more generous man in all of baseball. I hope some of it rubs off on me.

“My supervisor announced that Ben could only sign one item per person and wouldn't have time for photos. Ben turned to me and said "If they want pictures, they can take pictures. If they set something in front of me to be signed, I intend to sign it, no matter how many." I nodded, said "Yes sir", and we proceeded.

“An elderly woman with advanced Parkinson's disease asked Ben if he could sign a bat she had brought from her grandson. She kept apologizing for her shakiness as she handed him the bat. Ben was so sweet and accommodating. After signing it, he took both her hands in his and they said a prayer together. They talked for some time and asked if she wanted a picture with him.

After her friend took the photo, he took out his phone, handed it to me and asked me if I could photograph them for him to remember their time together.

“Later, a woman with two young boys wearing Zobrist jerseys approached the table, but the younger boy was scared to step up on the platform. Ben got up from his seat behind the table, picked him up, put him on his lap, and gave him his World Series ring to play with. The little guy lit up and hugged him. They all took an amazing photo together.

“Security guys are supposed to look imposing and cold, but I couldn't help but tear up witnessing such heartfelt moments.”

Zobrist and the Cubs will be back in Chicago in April for the opening of the regular season, but the infielder will report to spring training in just a couple of weeks in Arizona.
