Chicago Cubs Pay Homage to Basketball With Themed-Road Trip

Players were tasked with wearing basketball jerseys, and some surprising choices were made

The Chicago Cubs are coming off of a 3-4 homestand and a stinging loss to the Cincinnati Reds, but the team is keeping things loose with their first themed road trip of the season.

The Cubs are heading to Houston to take on the Astros in a three-game series beginning on Monday, and in honor of the upcoming NBA Finals, the team was tasked with finding their favorite basketball jerseys for the journey southward:

Some players went for the full look, with Anthony Rizzo and Albert Almora Jr. both wearing the “Miami Vice” tribute jerseys that the Heat debuted in the last few seasons. Both players also honored Dwyane Wade, who retired from the NBA after last season.

Pitcher Jon Lester went old school, rocking a Penny Hardaway Magic jersey and his Air Max Penny shoes.

Jason Heyward appealed to Chicago fans by rocking a Michael Jordan jersey (although he went with the number 45 instead of 23), and Cole Hamels did his best impression of Jackie Moon, wearing a custom Flint Tropics uniform.

Javier Báez also went for the old school look, paying homage to Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

We will keep fans updated on this story as it develops, and we’ll see if the jerseys pay off as the Cubs head to Houston for a Monday afternoon game with the Rockets (sorry, Astros).
