Anthony Rizzo's Status for Home Opener Remains Unclear

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo missed the team’s final three games of their series with the Milwaukee Brewers, but it isn’t clear if that will be enough for him to play in the team’s home opener.

Rizzo, who has been dealing with back tightness, said he sustained the injury on Monday, and that it tightened back up after he played Thursday against the Brewers.

“It’s just one of those things where I hope to get it under control now so it’s not a grind all year,” he told media on Sunday.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon wouldn’t confirm whether or not Rizzo would play against the Pirates when the Cubs open their home schedule on Monday, but did say that he would be okay just letting Rizzo have Monday and Tuesday, a scheduled off day for the Cubs, off.

“I’m not overtly concerned based on talking to Riz,” he said. “Any time you’re dealing with the back, you never know. I’m okay if it’s not Monday because we have the off-day, and that would give him two full days to rest it.”

If Rizzo can’t play, Victor Caratini will likely play first base again, with Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber likely moving up in the lineup to face Ivan Nova and the Pirates.
