Cubs to Recall Addison Russell From Triple-A, Place Pedro Strop on Injured List

Russell has been playing for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs after being activated from the restricted list

It’s been nearly a week since the Chicago Cubs officially activated shortstop Addison Russell from the restricted list following his suspension over domestic violence allegations, and now he will be back on the field as he will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Russell, who was optioned to Iowa after he was activated from the restricted list on May 2, was officially recalled before the game. He will bat eighth against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night and will play second base, the team said.

NBC Sports Chicago’s David Kaplan first reported that Russell was in Chicago on Wednesday, and also reported that the Cubs were expected to call him up to the team’s active 25-man roster. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune also confirmed that Russell will be back in the mix for the Cubs on Thursday.

The Cubs also placed Ben Zobrist on the Restricted List for personal reasons. Reliever Pedro Strop was placed on the Injured List with a left hamstring strain, and was replaced on the active roster by pitcher Mike Montgomery.

Russell, who served a suspension handed down by Major League Baseball, was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife Melisa Reidy last year. Reidy alleged in a blog post that the shortstop physically and mentally abused her, and after her allegations became public Russell was placed on administrative leave by the team.

Russell’s suspension came to an end last week, but the Cubs opted to keep him in Triple-A to allow him a chance to sharpen his game. No corresponding roster move has been announced, but Ben Zobrist was scratched from the lineup on Tuesday, indicating that he could be placed on the injured list as a way to put Russell back in the mix.
