Chicago Christmas Tree Recycling Program Kicks Off Jan. 5

Trees can be dropped off beginning on Jan. 5 at 25 locations around the city

Beginning January 5, Chicago residents will be able to drop off their Christmas trees at 25 locations throughout the city.

The recycling program, now in its 30th year, will allow residents to drop off their trees at the selected locations in order to help keep them out of alleys, and to divert organic materials from landfills, according to Department of Streets and Sanitation Commissioner John F. Tulley.

“Recycling your holiday tree gives it new life,” he said in a statement.

The trees can be dropped off at any of the 25 designated locations between Jan. 5 and 19, according to the Chicago Park District. Trees must have lights, tinsel, and other decorations removed before being dropped off, and should have bags removed before they’re dropped in the corrals.

More than 268,000 trees have been mulched during the life of the program, including more than 18,000 last year.
