Would-Be Carjackers Get in Gunfight With Chicago Cop in Broad Daylight, Video Shows

Footage of a shootout in broad daylight on Chicago’s Southwest Side last April was released Wednesday on the Civilian Office of Police Accountability's website.

Video from the Ashburn neighborhood shows two armed men walk up to a car that just parked on west 79th Street near Pulaski Road. The suspects open the doors and point handguns at the driver who turns out to be a Chicago police officer. Another angle shows the off-duty cop running past one of the gunmen out into traffic. A school bus passes by as the shootout begins. Police say he told the suspects he’s a cop before firing his weapon at them.

As they continue to exchange gunfire, both suspects exit on the same side, dropping a backpack from the car and running off to a nearby getaway car waiting for them.

Police tell us no one was injured during this shootout.

The off-duty officer then runs after them, less than a minute later he comes back to his car and calls for backup.

After patrol cars arrive, witnesses point out a bullet hole and a shattered window of another parked car.

Investigators are still looking for the suspects . Anyone who recognizes them is urged to call Chicago police.
