Chicago Botanic Garden Closed Friday Because of Floods

The Chicago Botanic Garden was closed Friday following days of flooding across parts of northern Illinois.

The garden said it was closed "due to the high amound of rain experienced in Lake County," but said it didn't expect many longterm impacts to the garden that holds 2.6 million plants.

"The Garden's waterways were intentionally designed to provide flood control benefits for downstream communities, and over the past few days the Garden has temporarily stored over 100 million gallons of floodwater," an alert from the garden read.

Flooding in northern parts of the Chicago area continued to shut down roadways, threaten homes and close businesses Friday.

With Lake County declaring a state of emergency, Gov. Bruce Rauner is slated to tour flood damage in the area Friday.

Flood Warnings remained in effect along the Des Plaines and Fox Rivers Friday morning. As of 4:45 a.m., the National Weather Service reported the Des Plaines River at Lincolnshire was at 16.2 feet and officials expect it will continue rising to near 17 feet by Saturday afternoon. Flood stage is 12.5 feet.
