Connor McDavid Lifts Oilers Over Blackhawks Sunday

McDavid scored in overtime to give the Oilers a win at the United Center

The Chicago Blackhawks got a strong performance out of goaltender Cam Ward and limited the Edmonton Oilers to just 26 shots on Sunday night, but it wasn’t enough as they lost a 2-1 overtime decision at the United Center.

The Blackhawks did get a point out of the game, but lost in overtime as Oilers captain Connor McDavid beat Ward to give his team the victory.

Brent Seabrook scored the lone goal of the game for the Blackhawks on a first period tally, and Zack Kassian scored his first goal of the season for Edmonton. Cam Talbot stopped 31 shots for the Oilers in the game, and Ward stopped 24 shots in a losing effort.

The Blackhawks got on the board first in the first period, as Seabrook notched a power play tally. Patrick Kane skated around the edge of the zone, and found Seabrook alone in front, and the defenseman slapped home a shot over Talbot’s shoulder to give the Blackhawks the lead.

Just a few minutes later, the Oilers scored to tie things up. After a mad scramble in front of the net, Kassian collected the puck, picked his spot, and lifted a soft shot over Ward to knot things at 1-1 through 20 minutes of play.

That score would remain intact until the overtime period, when McDavid did what he does best. On a 2-on-1 rush against Erik Gustafsson, Leon Draisaitl fed a perfect saucer pass across the ice to McDavid, who beat Ward to give the Oilers the victory.

The Blackhawks will have a few days off before beginning a road trip with a game against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. That trip will take them through western Canada, as they will also rematch against Edmonton on Thursday and will battle the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
