A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for several counties across the Chicago area early Wednesday, as the region woke up to rain, sleet and snow ahead of the morning commute.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory just after 5 a.m. CST for Cook, DuPage, LaSalle, Kane, Kendall, Grundy and Will counties. It was expected to last through 10 a.m., with the period of highest snowfall happening through 7 a.m., according to the NWS.
The advisory warned of moderate to heavy at times wet snow impacting the morning commute, creating hazardous driving conditions thanks to reduced visibility and slick roads.

Wet snow was expected, occasionally mixing with sleet, the NWS said. Western parts of Cook County from O'Hare to Oak Lawn could see total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with up to 1 inch of slushy accumulation to the east, according to the advisory.
Suburban counties farther west could see total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, according to the NWS, with isolated higher amounts even reaching near 5 inches.
The accumulations were mostly expected on primarily grassy and elevated surfaces, periods of heavy snow could result in slushy conditions on untreated roadways, with experts warning commuters to use caution when driving.
